This week has been very eventful with SharePoint 2010 being announced as RTM  (Released to Manufacturing) and due to be available to schools over the next few months in time for a summer upgrade. SharePoint 2010 is of course just one member of the Office family and one of the killer apps for SharePoint 2010 is the emergence of Office Web Apps. If you don’t know what Office Web Apps are they are basically free web based versions of the popular Microsoft Office suite with web apps for Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note. The ability to access, open and even edit Office documents from within SharePoint without any software on your computer is a massive step forward and something I will be blogging about a lot in the next few months with detailed examples.

The reason for this quick post is the news that Microsoft have adapted Office web apps to create a Facebook app simply called Docs. As Lili Cheng from Microsoft explains,  ’Built on Microsoft Office 2010, the Docs app enables Facebook users for the first time to create and share Microsoft Office documents directly with their Facebook friends, using the Office tools they already know.’  This certainly looks like a big play by Microsoft to better compete with Google in the area of cloud computing and turning this app around in less than 4 months is impressive.
